Teacher Professional Development Workshops
Enjoy a workshop in one of Denver’s greatest classrooms, the Denver Zoo! Meet keepers and animals up close and personal. Head back to school with great ideas for how to link the life sciences with all of your other curricular needs. All workshop participants receive graduate-level relicensure credit through the Colorado School of Mines. Workshop and standards-based curriculum materials are provided. There’s more to a desert than cacti, camels and sand! Come to Denver Zoo and discover the diversity of plant and animal life that call the desert home. We’ll take a closer look at different types of desert biomes and we’ll meet animals with some incredible adaptations for survival in these extreme environments. You’ll experience live animal demonstrations, a guided tour of the Zoo, and a wealth of hands-on activities to bring the drama of desert survival back to your classroom.

Meet animals from all around the world, learn about intersections between the natural world and human cultures, and come away with new and innovative ways to teach students of all ages to appreciate earth’s amazing biodiversity.

Experience a world that awakes when the sun goes down. In this special overnight teacher workshop, you’ll meet the animals who dwell – and hunt, forage, and build! – in darkness, and the superlative senses that help them survive. Meet our expert animal keepers, tour the Zoo with night vision, and spend a night (comfortably indoors!) at Denver Zoo. This workshop comes complete with classroom-ready curriculum applications to bring the night to life for your students.

Learn how polar animals survive with unique physical and behavioral adaptations and further your knowledge and activity base on subjects including global warming and our polar connections. Course Title: Conserving Animal Diversity: The Role of Genetics (NEW!)

In this workshop developed especially for secondary teachers and science specialists, we’ll examine how zoologists use genetic information to manage species conservation, the role modern zoos play in housing, breeding, and conserving endangered species, and the Denver Zoo’s work to protect biodiversity around the globe. This workshop will also cover key topics in genetics and theories of convergent and divergent evolution, natural selection, and biodiversity. Plan to take back innovative curriculum applications grounded in critical thinking and hands-on exploration.
